A couple buddies and I decided to tackle Mt. Aeneas on Memorial Day 2015. Much to our surprise, (got some bad info form the park people) 95% of the trail was still covered in a few feet of snow.
We still decided to push through and get to the top but it was quite a challenging hike with all the snow. My shoes and socks were soaked about an hour in so I definitely recommend some water proof boots or bring a couple dry pairs of socks to change into.
We passed a few other people early on in the hike but I don’t think too many people actually ventured up to the top (Microwave Relay Station). We didn’t climb the ridge to the summit because it was still covered in snow and looked pretty gnarly at the time. I could see that other people had hiked it though. The entire hike ended up being about six miles with about 1500 feet in elevation changes.
Quick Info: Mt Aeneas is just over 7500ft in elevation and it’s located in the Jewel Basin area.
Directions: Head north on Echo Lake Road until you come to Jewel Basin Road (No. 5392) and then follow this road for approximately 7 miles.
Tips: I highly recommend bear spray, water, change of socks, lunch for the summit and take lots of pics!
